Energy Modeling and Solar Designs
Energy Modeling: E. R. Trought Design Incorporated performs detailed energy audits to accurately determine energy end-use consumption. This is used to model energy conserving measures and calculate economic paybacks.
Energy modeling is an excellent tool, providing insight into energy usage and presenting opportunities for energy and cost savings for any project, new or existing. We offer energy modeling services to demonstrate compliance with LEED, OBC-SB10, and ASHRAE 90.1, and to highlight the energy and economic benefits of implementing a variety of measures. We have the software, training, and technical skills to model the effects of any energy retrofit proposal.
Solar Designs: Providing structural design services for products that reduce energy use, we design new buildings or modify existing buildings to accommodate renewable energy systems. Our engineers have provided structural engineering services to solar thermal and photovoltaic (PV) suppliers and building owners, working on installations ranging from single-family residential 10kW microfit systems, to industrial 500kW Fit systems. Solar designs include: roof mount, ground-mount, ballast, and wall mount systems.

Types of systems
Roof Mount Systems: Complete structural assessments of buildings to review structural integrity and capacity of existing roof to support additional loads imposed by solar panel systems. Stress analysis and design of racking intended to support the panels. Structural analysis and design of anchorage to the roof. Providing design solutions for various roofing systems including: wood framed roofs, standing metal seam decks, flat membrane roofs, flat bituminous membrane roofs, concrete decks, and steel frame roofing systems.
Ground Mount Systems: Stress analysis for entire pole mount assemblies, single axis tilt aluminum frames, and static aluminum frame structures. Structural analysis and design of foundations including: deep and shallow foundations and foundations anchored to bedrock.
Roof Ballast Systems: Wind and seismic analysis to establish ballast loads and ballast layout. Structural analysis of roof system to support additional loads imposed by ballast.
Wall Mount Systems: Complete structural assessments of supporting structure intended to support additional loads imposed by solar panel systems. Stress analysis and design of aluminum frame intended to support the panels.
As part of our services, E. R. Trought Design Incorporated will assist you with the submission process required to obtain all necessary approvals and permits for Renewable Energy projects. Experienced with the permitting process all over Ontario, we have inspected and approved systems as far as Petrolia, Matachewan, North Bay, and Ottawa.
